Times of Crisis

In times of crisis, it seems obvious that we should forget about so-called luxuries to save money, take care of our expenses, buy only what we need and think more carefully about the choices we make.

While sensible at first glance, all of this creates a state of mind in which we operate with the assumption that there's not enough for everyone and that we have to share what little we do have. We call this a "lack context." We live with the feeling that we will never get anything we want and that we are forced to defend what's ours. From this context, we end up receiving less and less, when we wanted to get more and more, causing us to work harder and harder.

Eventually, we begin to ask ourselves: How are we going to get out of this? What can we do differently? When will this crisis end?

These questions help us look at the actions we can take to achieve different results. The approach suggested by Ontological Coaching encourages us to look beyond our actions and focus on understanding how we are seeing and talking about ourselves. From this broad point of view, we can generate new thoughts that allow us to live in a "context of abundance" where crisis is an opportunity to start looking outward, leaving aside our selfishness and putting our focus on growing a community and joining forces with others to create synergy.

As a means of taking responsibility for our success and that of our community, Destiny Consulting is implementing this concept through our free Coaching Workshops, dedicating ourselves to sharing the tools that help people generate growth in their businesses, and to carry their successes forward to benefit their communities.

Joomla has won the Packt Publishing award for the top open source CMS.

Now in its sixth year, many consider the Packt Open Source Award as a top honor for an open source project. Joomla won the award based on a combination of public voting and input by a panel of judges consisting of open source luminaries.

Julian Copes of Packt Publishing said:

“Although around since 2005, Joomla really reinvented itself this year with the introduction of Joomla 1.6 and 1.7, the first product releases for the CMS since 2008. Furthermore, Joomla realized dramatic growth this year as evidenced by its number of downloads and documented government sites powered by Joomla. We are proud to honor Joomla with its third Packt Open Source Award since we launched it six years ago.”

Joomla previously won the same award, the Packt Open Source CMS Award, in 2006 and also won the Packt Best PHP Open Source CMS Award 2007. Some of the milestones the open source CMS reached this year that contributed to it winning the Packt award include:

  • Joomla surpassed 26 million downloads. Although it launched in 2005, this number is only from 2007 to the present since that is when Joomla began documenting downloads.
  • It documented more than 2,900 government sites worldwide powered by Joomla. These include the U.S. Central Command, U.K. Ministry of Defense and many more.
  • Info-Tech Research recently confirmed Joomla powers more than 1.5 million websites. These include Citibank, eBay, General Electric and many more.

Ryan Ozimek, president of Open Source Matters, the not-for-profit created to provide organizational, legal and financial support to the Joomla project, said:

“Joomla’s documented growth over the past year is a bi-product of our broad, diverse community spanning hundreds of thousands of people around the world. The people and open source experts have spoken with this award and we are honored that they have acknowledged what all of these people in our community passionately believe — Joomla is the absolutely best platform to power websites, Intranets and blogs.”

Google+ Launches Branded Pages

Google has finally unveiled brand pages for Google+, allowing businesses and brands to join Google’s social network.

“So far Google+ has focused on connecting people with other people,” Google SVP of Social Vic Gundotra said in a blog post. “But we want to make sure you can build relationships with all the things you care about—from local businesses to global brands—so today we’re rolling out Google+ Pages worldwide.”

The new Google+ brand pages look similar to Google+ Profiles, except for the little square icon that designates that it’s a Page rather than a Profile. Users can add brands such as Fox News, the Dallas Cowboys and Angry Birds to their circles, check out their information and browse their photos. When users add a brand to their circles, it increases that brand’s follower count.

Here's our page :)  ADD US TO YOUR CIRCLES at https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/104294490742835639574/104294490742835639574/posts

Websites now and then... A retrospect view on website technology (2004 - 2011)

I was cleaning my computer files today and found one of the websites we did in 2004... WOW... it was like TIME TRAVELING :)
It's amazing how website technology has evolved in the past 7 years.

Then (2004)

View snapshot bellow of an OLD static HTML with frames.

This site was consider awesome at that time :) but looking at it today, every picture on the photo gallery was a separated HTML file (A SEPARATED PAGE) instead of being part of an actual PHOTO GALLERY... I also remember having to setup every link for the BEFORE and AFTER arrows in the gallery...  each a separated link done one by one... CRAZY!
Another old technology I remember as part of this site was the use of FRAMES, then a very nice tool to separate different parts of a website and create nice menus with pages inside, NOW a horrible memory from the past that hides EVERYTHING from google :)

Now (2011)

View a snapshot of one of our latest Joomla CMS Websites bellow (www.elizabethvanriper.com)

With the growth of CMS (Content management solutions), now everything is easier and faster. That photo gallery is a component that you just upload pictures to, and it shows them in different formats depending on the settings you provide thru a very simple online tool :)
New tools like blogs, RSS feeds and contact forms make websites more interactive and engaging. On the other hand, all the power is in your hands, and not on the designer's or programmer's hands.

You own your website, you can change your website and make it grow yourself...

Facebook Shopping (f-commerce) Consumers spend 67% more on Facebook?

Facebook shopping (f-commerce) is beginning to turn the tide of doing business online, and the businesses that are taking advantage of using facebook fan pages for at least one step of their marketing process are reaping the benefits.

Facebook Shopping and Fan Page eCommerce Predictions

The experts are predicting $30 billion in global purchases on facebook by 2015. Currently, we are at $5 billion in transactions occurring on Facebook, so $30 billion seems a long way off, until you look at the trends. The truth is, if Facebook is watching the numbers , we’re most likely going to see more and more features for businesses added to the already growing fan page commerce offering.

If you’re just looking at fan pages along, Facebook’s actions suggest that there’s no limit to where things could go. Facebook is offering businesses the ability to attract thousands of new fans with new features like iframes, questions, at tagging, etc. They’ve given businesses a place to interact with their customers, which is leading to more sales because everything is happening inside a trusted and safe environment.

People Talking About - Facebook's new metric for pages

Facebook has overhauled its Pages Insights analytics tool and added a new metric to gauge the health of a page: “People Talking About.”

That statistic, which users will see on Pages below the total number of “Likes,” will be one of four tracked by Pages Insights. The idea is that users will understand a Page with a high People Talking About rating is one that has compelling content. Likewise, content creators will be motivated to make their Pages more comment-worthy.

People Talking About (that might not be the final name for the metric; at press time, Facebook wasn’t sure) will measure user-initiated activity related to a Page, including posting to a Page’s Wall, “liking,” commenting, sharing a Page post or content on the Page, answering a Question posed to fans, mentioning a Page, “liking” or sharing a deal or checking in at your Place.

Update Oct 7:  This new metric shows the number of people on Facebook who have engaged with your page in the last 7 days

More facebook changes... LOTS of them

Facebook has just launched an incredible amount of changes, and as everybody else we are trying to keep up with them :)
BTW: Facebook has hit 800 million users. The social network just saw a new record for the most visitors in one day: an eye-popping 500 million.
Here's a list of the most important facebook changes this week:

# 1 Timeline

In other words, your COMPLETE life on facebook (check pictures). This is an ever-evolving profile page that scrolls all the way back to your birth, so you and all your friends will see EVERYTHING you have posted on facebook since you got in + everything you add now, since you can also add posts in the past :).
Timeline is in beta now (only developers), and will be opt-in to start. In the long run, it will become the new default profile page.
Check the snapshot bellow to get a sneak peak.

# 2 The LIKE family is growing..

You will be able to [verb] any [noun]. You’ll start seeing the option to tell the world you’re Reading a particular book, for example, or Watching a given movie, or Listening to a certain tune.

# 3 Facebook apps need only ask permission once to share stories on your behalf.

This is one of those security changes that will bring some controversy.

# 4 All “lightweight” information is going to the Ticker.

All the information you don't really care about, like farmville status updates will go to the ticker so you see the most important stuff.

# 5 You will be able to watch TV and movies, listen to music, and read news with your friends

all within Facebook, thanks to a whole bunch of partnerships

What do you think about these changes?

Top 10 Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Website Using LinkedIn

is a great way to generate free, organic, traffic to your website. Although LinkedIn has been great for job seekers during the most recent economic cycle, it is much more than that. Here you have 10 tips on how to get more traffic from linkedin.

1.  Complete Your Profile:

Complete your profile 100%, add a great picture of yourself, and take the entire process very seriously.

2.  Increase Your Connections:

The more connections you have, the more people will have access to your profile.

3.  Customize Your Website Links:

However this is not a “call to action” and you are missing potential traffic because of it.

4.  Answer Questions:

The more questions you answer, the better the chances are of that person asking the question to click on your blog to learn more about you.

5.  Update Status:

LinkedIn also has a status update feature that is a lot like Twitter, only it gives you 148 characters to work with instead of 140.

6.  Join Related Groups:

Whatever your blog is about, there is an audience of people on LinkedIn that share interest with.

7.  Post Comments In Groups:

Some larger groups are receiving hundreds of new discussion topics every few days

8.  Add RSS Feed to Groups:

Each group has a section that allows you to add a link to a website with the latest news you think is relevant to that group.  It also allows you to add your own RSS feed or website link so it will automatically update the group every time you post a new article on your blog.

9.  Create a Group:

This may be one of the most powerful things you can do on LinkedIn.  I won’t go into all of the amazing details on how this has helped me, but I will tell you that owning a group drives a lot of traffic to your site.

10.  Add the Blog Application to Your Profile:

This application posts the title and first paragraph for your most recent articles you have published on your LinkedIn profile.

Contact us if you need any help with any of these suggestions in linkedin.

Is Google Adwords only for big companies?

Great article about google adwords from Ryan Singel, WIRED Magazine. It shows how google adwords is only working for big companies that have customers that will represent big money in the future.

Google is now making $3 billion a month in advertising — the majority of which comes from little text ads next to search results.

You might wonder how that’s possible, and who’s spending that much money on search ads.

The answer, according to Larry Kim — the founder of a company that sells software to analyze text ad campaigns — is in industries where a customer is worth a lot of money over the long-term.

Wordstream, Kim’s company, analyzed search terms that advertisers pay the most to have their ads show up next to, and grouped the top 10,000 by industry, using its own software. They multiplied the so-called cost-per-click — what advertisers pay Google for each time someone clicks on their ads — times the number of times people search on that word. They then divided that pie up by keywords that fit different industries.

The top industry? Insurance, where companies eager to outbid their rivals for new customers pay Google more than $54 for a click. Together they make up 24 percent of Google’s revenues from search advertising, according to Wordstream’s calculations. Companies in the business of issuing loans come second, with CPC rates of more than $44 — providing nearly 13 percent of Google’s revenues.

“There are lots of lawyers finding clients,” Kim said. “Even if they have to pay for 50 to 100 clicks to get a client, they can get that back in a court case that last for years, all the while billing $500 an hour. The same thing happens with CRM software, where companies pay a high month fee.”

Again — an industry that can make lots of money from a customer over a long period of time — making it not unwise to pay $27 per click, even if only one out of 50 of those who click on the ad actually signs up for your service.

The top 20 categories account for about 70 percent of Google’s ad revenues, according to Wordstream’s calculations. Wordstream, which offers some free keyword analysis tools, sells software that lets companies and search engine marketing consultants organize and manage their advertising campaigns.

As for the remaining 30 percent?

About 1000 different categories combine to make up that last 30 percent, each getting thinner and thinner — which Kim refers to as the “Long Tail,” a reference to the Wired magazine article and later book by Chris Anderson. Those categories together “represent a tremendous amount of spend,” Kim said.

3 tips on how to use Google+ for your Business

Google+ is an invite only social network for now, and they're openly discouraging businesses from creating accounts. They do have a form you can fill out for your business, which will put you on an alert when they roll out features for businesses, but no one is sure how exactly that's going to pan out. However Google+ is not business ready yet, with the birth of a new network comes a huge opportunity to talk to people, be engaging and start building relationships with people you may never have otherwise had access to. Here you have some tips on how to utilize this great new tool for your business:

Business owners should be utilizing their employees who are social media savvy and passionate about the company. They are the ones that will be relatable and able to build meaningful relationships on Google+. Use them as touch- points and allow them to post content about your business. This will also mean that, when it comes time for the "business features" of Google+ to be released, you'll have employees that understand the etiquette and environment of the network, which will be key in connecting with people.

Speaking of the crowd, Google+ organizes your crowd with a feature called "Circles." This is a unique blend of a Facebook friend list and a Twitter following. You put people in Circles and you can customize and establish permissions for them. When you want to share a video, post a photo or talk about your cat, you can choose to do it publicly (all your Circles) or only share it with certain people. Like Twitter, people can add you to their Circles (follow you) and you don't have to add them or worry about their messages showing up in your stream.

This is a great way to organize people in different industries and sort your stream by placing different priorities on certain flows of content.

One of the best and most important features for a business owner on Google+ is the Hangout. Hangouts are multiple person video chats (up to 10) where you can click a button and let anyone in your Circles come video chat with you. Conversations had by text, email, tweets, etc. are great, but when you can see someone's face and interact directly with them it's 100 times better.

Enjoy Google+ Competition is always good, we will see lots of great features in the near future from Google+ and the other networks...

The Google+ Project is here! Is this the End of Facebook or another failed trial like google buzz or google wave?

The Google+ Project is here! Is this the End of Facebook or another failed trial like google buzz or google wave? I hope this is as good as it sounds and it's hear to stay!

Sharing is a huge part of the web, a part that we think could be a lot simpler. That’s why we’ve been working on adding a few new things to Google: to make connecting with people on the web more like connecting with them in the real world. We hope you like what we’ve cooked up so far. And stay tuned, because there’s more to come.

GOOGLE Circles:  You share different things with different people. But sharing the right stuff with the right people shouldn’t be a hassle. Circles makes it easy to put your friends from Saturday night in one circle, your parents in another, and your boss in a circle by himself, just like real life.
